Thailand's flood bill sits in a single province

The concentration of losses in Chonburi makes estate-level flood resilience a supply-chain and site-selection issue for manufacturers.

Preliminary Industry Ministry data put 98% of reported business flood damage in Chonburi, concentrating the exposure in Thailand’s Eastern Seaboard industrial belt.

The read. Thailand’s Industry Ministry estimates that the September–October floods caused THB18.21 billion of damage to 4,635 businesses across 59 provinces as of 13 October. Chonburi alone accounts for roughly THB17.9 billion, including THB17.8 billion in industrial estates.

The national headline therefore conceals a highly concentrated industrial shock in the province at the centre of Thailand’s automotive, electronics and manufacturing supply chains.

A separate Federation of Thai Industries estimate puts losses at THB6–7 billion across more than 2,000 businesses in 14 provinces. It uses a different scope and should not be read as a competing estimate of the same losses.

What to watch. The preliminary figures make estate-level resilience the practical question for investors. Check drainage and flood defences, insurance cover, business-continuity plans and supplier concentration for individual sites in Chonburi.

The distribution of the losses matters more than the number of provinces reporting. Disruption inside a small number of industrial estates can travel through production networks well beyond the flooded area.
